Growing up, almost every year we went to see The Nutcracker put on by the Oklahoma City Ballet at the Civic Center in Oklahoma City.
It was quite the affair — my twin sister and I dressed up in our Christmas dresses (which let me tell you, was a full on Laura Ashley match-fest or some other sassy southern designer trend), our fancy shoes (yep, those patent leather Mary Janes were put to good use those days), and the curl fairy came to our house the night before.
**If you’re wondering, the “curl fairy” was what my kindergarten teacher called it when my mom used sponge rollers on our hair.
As I got a little older, we didn’t go every year, BUT my ballet teacher was *in* The Nutcracker. She was a dancer in the Oklahoma Ballet Company (which I thought was the coolest thing since sliced bread, and quite honestly still do), and she told us stories of her practices, dancing onstage, and gearing up for The Nutcracker.
In so many ways, The Nutcracker was a part of my childhood, and in preparing for the Christmas season (and knowing that I’m going to be whisked into the season with a styled shoot AT THE CIVIC CENTER WITH OKC BALLET DANCERS … I couldn’t think of a better way to spread Christmas cheer.
Sidenote — I may be a little starstruck painting these ballet dancers in a month… I’ll keep you posted…
So, the idea for The Nutcracker Heirloom Ornaments was born, and since I couldn’t decide on just *one* style, I opted for an abstract option with 24 karat gold leaf embellishments and a sugar plum ornament — a mix of figs, pomegranates, lemons, apples — with gold leaf embellishments.
These ornaments are totally one of a kind and completely unique.
