A TUTU EXPLOSION.
Yep – that’s what my seven-year-old self experienced in out ballet recital that year. All limbs, very little coordination (how much is normal for a seven-year-old anyway?), and dressed in an outfit that itched like the DICKENS.
That’s what I remember most.
I’m not sure I was a natural at ballet, but I definitely worked hard at it. At seven I was about as graceful as a baby giraffe on roller skates (and if you’ve read GIRAFFES CAN’T DANCE then you understand), but hey, my mom thought I could be a prima ballerina someday. Who was I to disappoint her?!
So, there I am, backstage at the recital…
Nervously practicing my pliés, pas de bourrées, and pirouettes. The costume was itchy, backstage felt like being in an ice cooler, and my face and hands were somehow sweating because of nerves. But when the curtain lifted, I strutted out there, all frills and glitter, itchiness forgotten, ready to take on the world.
The music started, and I began to dance. I can’t say it went flawlessly. I may have been a beat behind everyone else, and I may have tripped over my own feet a couple of times. But you know what? I loved every second of it.
And even though I’ll never be a professional ballerina, that recital taught me a valuable lesson: it’s not about being the best; it’s about growing and learning and becoming the best version of you, continually improving, every single day. And that’s a lesson I’ve carried with me ever since.
It’s really this performance aspect that made me love live painting. With ballet, I knew I NEVER wanted to trip onstage again, and so I continued to dance daily and practice. Between dance classes and practicing at home, I probably danced at LEAST 20 hours a week from ages 8-14, if not MORE. And as I got older, that time only increased. It’s that idea of just getting ONE PERCENT better everyday – growing and continuing to improve constantly rather than assuming that one day I’ll just be better.
Just as I felt standing backstage, when I’m about to paint live, I feel that tingle of nerves – but by the time I have my easel set up, water in my glasses, and palette opened, I completely lose myself in the moment.
Mistakes may happen, just as I tripped over my own feet. A stroke might go awry, or the colors might not blend as expected. But that’s part of the beauty of live painting – it’s raw, it’s real, and it’s in the moment.
It also – like ballet – has taken years of practice to get to the point of feeling confident enough and being able to work quickly enough to create that magical piece in the time alotted.
And that’s a beautiful thing, in ballet, in painting, and in life.
