Well of all the gin joints!

Hey there friend, fancy meeting you here…

I have a feeling about you because you clicked on this post:

You’re sick and tired of seeing the same photos on everyone’s news feed — yes they may be by different photographers, but the trends? They’re so similar!

You keep looking for ALL the things online — you’re saving all the photos on Pinterest, all the inspiration, all the EVERYTHING — and still can’t decide what’s right for you, what’s going to make your wedding feel yours as you look back on the beauty of your day…

You have BIG PLANS and are anxiously awaiting your dreamboat wedding day to arrive — you want to please your guests but also make it a memorable day for YOU and YOUR FIANCÉ!

Oh friend, if that’s you — read ON.

Flashback to 2013 when my husband and I got married —

weren’t we cute?! All young and free without a care in the world…

Well, here we were mid first-look and do you know what he forgot? Hair gel.  Do you know how windy Oklahoma is in the summer?

They don’t sing “the wind comes sweeping down the plains” for nothing…

Our photographer worked magic, but there were still quite a few pictures I loved that my hubby … well, didn’t.

Photos are an amazing way to capture precious moments in our lives — they’ll be treasured for a long time, and photo albums are some of my favorites to pull out on special occasions.  BUT — and I say this as lovingly as possible — friend, we’re doing it wrong

We’re saving our memories (especially of the once in a life time wedding day) WRONG.

And oh my goodness, there’s a better way.

In this blog I’m sharing how you are capturing your memories WRONG — and how you can fix it so you have a timelessly captured heirloom that lasts for generations.

IT’S NOT THAT PHOTOS ARE BAD…

When you look back on your wedding day, you want to nostalgically remember the precious simple moments — when your groom delicately touched your hand at the altar, the placing of the rings ever so gingerly (or not so gingerly, if you needed some mmph to get it on!), celebrating as you walked back down the aisle and so much more!

Wedding days go by so stinking fast — there’s so much happening and photos/videos help you relive those moments simply and beautifully.  BUT — on the flip side, with a live wedding painting? You get to share that beautiful + intimate moment with all who enter your home, not just when you pull out the ol’ photo albums…

The painting that hangs on your wall for a lifetime will definitely generate tons of more nostalgia simply by being THERE.  Not only is it a beautiful and meaningful heirloom, but it’s a reminder of the specialness of the day, the vows you took, and the promises that (by the grace of God) last a lifetime.

Paintings don’t have a shelf life. With a painting of one specific moment of your wedding, you’re letting everyone who see it she a one-of-a-kind moment, frozen in time, and honestly? It’s unlike anything they’ve ever seen.

YOU WANT TO FEEL + LOOK YOUR BEST

You want to feel beautiful and confident in your photos, and while typically that’s the case — it doesn’t always work out that way.  Sometimes “reality” isn’t as perfect as you wanted it to be.  Maybe that’s just me!?

When I look back at my wedding photos most of them are magical, but some of them … they are just like Monica falling flat on her face…

I don’t know if it’s just the angle, the way my dress is, it just isn’t quite “me.”  I felt like I was putting on a show for the photographer instead of embracing my own personality and ensuring the photos looked like “us.”

Looking at photos and trying to pick which ones we wanted to print had us like The Odd Couple going, “Oscar!” “Felix!”

And you know what’s the beautiful thing about a painting?

Exactly the right moment in exactly the right way can be highlighted. It’s perfection no matter how you slice it — you get the exact picture you want, in the exact way you want, and bonus?!

You get it the day of your wedding AND you get to see the process of the painting.

I mean, Cinderella’s fairy godmother’s got some mad skills… She did turn an impossibly plain old pumpkin into a golden carriage (and 100% channeling Whitney Houston’s fairy godmother magic and singing here)…

Well, I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I’m like your wedding fairy godmother — but the best part is I don’t need magic when I’ve got watercolor paints and brushes in hand…

And if I had 500 paintings of the exact same moment in a wedding sitting in a line-up, honest to goodness not TWO of them would look the same. Each one has its own EVERYTHING — and you know why? Because it’s all about what YOU want.

I’M AS SERIOUS AS YOU ARE ABOUT YOUR WEDDING

Also, you know how serious you are about your wedding? I got you.

I’m the same.  I’ve got a lot of spunk in me, but when push comes to shove, I want you to look and feel your best, and I actually guarantee you will walk away with a beautiful artifact of your day that can’t be compared to anything anyone else has.  Nothing else your friends have would even hold a candle to it.

I’m not saying photographers aren’t serious about you wedding because I know many of them and absolutely they ARE. Photographs are a wonderful and (I’d argue) necessary piece of your wedding day — providing the gift of memory of the whole day.

Buuuut let’s call a spade a spade — it’s one thing to get to edit and cull through images of your beautiful wedding in the privacy of the photographer’s own home (which takes a ton of skill that I do NOT have or even pretend to have)…

…it’s a totally different adventure to be on display at the reception, letting people watch you do what you do and still thriving to make the painting beautiful

So, bottom line? We’ve been preserving memories wrong here in the present day, and I think we need to take a note from the olden days — what has stood the test of time? The Mona Lisa? Or an old photograph?
