Secret time?
I didn’t love The Office when I first started watching it.
Call me crazy, but I just couldn’t handle the cringe factor of the first season.
BUT—I stuck with it (100% because my hubby LOVES IT and it was and still is his favorite show ever), and I not only adore the characters, I feel like I’d like to work in an office with Jim, Pam, Dwight, Stanley, Angela, Phyllis, and yes, even Michael.
**NOTE: I went very GIF heavy on this one because ~how could I not?!~ so click reader view if you don’t love GIFs…
Maybeeee not Andy though… Break me off a piece of that… Applesauce…
Rit dit dit da doo…
So—my husband loves The Office.
His entire family loves it.
It seemed like a rite of passage to watch it and love it too.
Today? I’m going out on a (pretty small) limb and spilling the beans on a whopping 5 times PAINTING FINE ART is like NBC’s The Office…
Get ready, because we gettin’ it on like donkey kong…
BEAUTY IN THE ORDINARY
I feel like this is such an easy connection to draw, so here we go. ARTISTS FIND BEAUTY IN ORDINARY THINGS. Coffee. Land. Water. Animals. Coffee. People. Did I mention coffee?
The Office did the EXACT SAME THING!
I mean, HELLOOOOO, it’s a documentary about a flipping PAPER COMPANY for cryin’ out loud! What would ever make ANYONE think that’s going to be interesting?!
“Everything I have I owe to this job… this stupid, wonderful, boring, amazing job.”
— Jim Halpert
BUT—the beauty of The Office was in the simplicity, the ordinary, the idea that YES, this mockumentary is about a mid-range paper supply company called Dunder Mifflin.
CAN BE A LITTLE RACY
Let’s call a spade a spade and realize that fine art has a huge and highly sought after category—nudes. That’s not to say they’re not “tasteful,” but let’s be real, some can definitely tow the line between tasteful, racy, and X-rated…
Michael Scott seems to be the perfect example of this with all his “That’s what she said” jokes! I mean, seriously.
Sidenote: when my husband and I started dating, I had NO IDEA he was referencing The Office whenever he said that. ♀️
It’s not vulgar, but Michael (and The Office) definitely digs into some things…
CONFIDENCE IS KEY
What even is artist block?! I’ll tell ya–it’s when an artist CANNOT think of what to create. It sucks–typically (in my case) due to a big stinking case of imposter syndrome).
BUT—part of being an artist? Pushing through that in the process, and being CONFIDENT that you will create beautiful work because you HAVE created beautiful work and you were CREATED to CREATE BEAUTIFUL WORK.
I think Michael’s line sums it up quite well actually:
“I am Beyonce, always.”
— Michael Scott
Between Michael and Dwight, someone is always full of confidence.
SOMETIMES YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE IT’S GOING
Sometimes you just don’t know where it is or where it’s going—sometimes you find it and sometimes you don’t…
Sometimes art is much like that. You start, but you don’t know where it’s going, and sometimes you lose it along the way! BUT IT’S OKAY! Not to worry, artists find it eventually!
A MISTAKE PLUS KELEVEN EQUALS ELEVEN
Mistakes happen.
We see them literally OVER AND OVER AND OVER in this show.
Jim doesn’t act for two whole freaking seasons.
Pam stays with Roy even though she shouldn’t.
Michael loves Jan even though she’s cray…
I mean seriously the list could go ON AND ON.
But somehow, some way, it’s okay.
That’s kinda like art. Mistakes happen, and it’s okay.
Just to recap? Fine art CAN BE LIKE NBC’s The Office…
Tell me in the comments: what is one of your favorite moments from The Office?!
I’d love to include it in my list!
