In my parents’ house, the house I grew up in, was a painting of a woman looking through binoculars onto what could only be a stage below. We in the audience couldn’t see the stage, and the way my mom placed the painting, it looked like she was looking out on the living room.
Clearly now as an adult I’ve never forgotten that picture–intended or not–that made me feel like what was going on in our home was as exciting and lovely as what was on a stage. I think that’s something lovely that art can do–evoke emotion and meaning without saying anything.
I know what some of you are thinking…
Sounds like some kind of “duh” moment, right?! But Honestly, it’s pretty interesting to think that throughout time, there are certain themes that have spanned all styles and are still the most popular!
The numbers on the calendar change, but the most popular themes remain the same.
I’m sharing some classic painting styles southern women (and more) will never part with + some simple ways to find exactly what you want.
THE STYLES/THEMES
In a 2003 study by Art Business Today — traditional landscapes, nostalgic places or local views, modern/semi-abstract landscapes, abstracts, dogs, figures, seascapes, impressionistic landscapes, and nudes were consistently the most popular themes according to about 800 galleries.
I can attest to the popularity of landscapes–in my super sophisticated and scientific Instagram polls, every time I poll my audience for what they want to see more of, the majority always says landscapes.

WHY THEY’RE POPULAR
I remember the day my mom got a Thomas Kinkaide painting–and honestly I have no idea if it was real or a print, but either way I knew it was a treasure.
I grew up in a home where art was treasured–some of it I liked, some of it I didn’t. I mean, if we’re being honest here (and I think we can be because we’re friends) some art is just weird to me. I’m sure some art is weird to you. And it’s okay! That’s a good thing and a good way for us to know what we like.
Each painting theme has multiple different styles–it’s less about the style and more about the content, which is why I make such a big deal about telling YOUR story beautifully in my commissions.

These themes take the cake because they bring back MEMORIES, make us feel nostalgic, and remember the good times, the “wish it was how it was” times, and the sweet simplicity that is rarely in everyday life.
HOW TO GET THEM
Paintings are expensive. That’s just the truth, and there’s no way around it. One of the main barriers my clients have before taking the plunge is the price.
You’re smart, friend, to not throw your money around like confetti. I get it. I do the same thing.
HOWEVER–most artists want you to feel connected to their work and cherish it. Artwork is something you cherish for a lifetime and then some, not just something you toss out in the garage sale next month.
